I think to be polite is respecting older
people in Japan. Japan is stricter about up- and- down relationships than
America. In general, younger people use honorific expression with older people.
If younger people speak too casually to older people who are not particularly
close to them, it is rude. When I was child, I was said by my father “You watch
your language. It is more important other things.” I have been careful for my
language since then. In addition, I think Consideration is important, too. For example,
when you ride on the train, you sit on a chair and then you find elderly person
who is standing. You should stand up and gave your seat to the elderly person. It
is polite. To pay attention to the people around you, exchange greeting with
around you and talking in polite language. I think these are very important and
these are to be polite in Japan.
